Everyone experiences stress and sadness during their lives, but therapy is often recommended to help patients achieve relief when emotional difficulties become chronic or overwhelming.
As part of obtaining treatment, many patients are asked to complete a mental health evaluation known as a psychiatric assessment. Typically, this assessment begins with a visit to a family doctor, who reviews the patient’s symptoms, concerns, and physical health. The doctor may then refer to a specialist (such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, or neuropsychiatrist) to perform further testing or recommend a therapeutic treatment plan.
